Battery Charging Time Calculation Guide
Basic Formula
Charging Time = (Battery Capacity × (100% - Current Charge Level)) / Charger Output
Example Calculation
For a 100Ah battery at 20% charge with 10A charger:
1. (100Ah × 80%) / 10A = 8 hours base time
2. Lithium battery (5% loss): 8 / 0.95 = 8.4 hours
3. Lead acid (15% loss): 8 / 0.85 = 9.4 hours
Key Considerations
1. Charger Efficiency: Quality chargers maintain 90-95% efficiency
2. Temperature Effects: Below 50°F/10°C can increase charge time by 20-50%
3. Battery Age: 3-year-old batteries may take 15-30% longer to charge
Safety Tips
• Always use temperature-compensated charging
• Never charge frozen batteries
• Stop charging if battery becomes hot
